The Sk-Eye is an outdoor classroom situated at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) and was constructed in 2018. It encapsulates our commitment to innovation and experimentation in architecture. Led by our Director Gina, and a team of 5 MArch Sustainable Architecture students completed the structure in just one week. Designed to engage and inspire, the hexagonal timber structure features two strategically framed doors, inviting visitors to step inside and immerse themselves in a space conducive to conversation and observation.

Constructed from locally sourced untreated larch 1 mile from the site, the structure embodies our dedication to sustainable building practices. To further minimise environmental impact, the hit-and-miss timber cladding was salvaged and reclaimed on-site, then treated using the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban. We experimented with charring the timber using an open fire method, reducing the carbon footprint associated with traditional gas burner method. The resulting contrast between the warm tones of the internal larch structure and the striking blackened exterior blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings.
